Research

Most coverage of UK energy schemes repeats the same headline figures without checking where they came from. This section is where we do that checking ourselves: pulling the underlying data from DESNZ, Ofgem and other primary sources, and publishing the numbers that don’t usually make it into the press release, including the ones that make a scheme look less impressive than its marketing suggests.

Every figure on these pages is sourced and dated. Where a number can’t be traced back to an official publication, we say so rather than repeat it anyway.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme in Numbers: The 2026 Uptake and Rejection Report

What DESNZ and Ofgem’s own figures show about Boiler Upgrade Scheme applications, including the near quarter of applications that don’t end in a paid grant, and whether the scheme is on track to meet government targets.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme’s Regional Gap: Grants and Installer Coverage by UK Region

The grant is the same everywhere; where it lands is not. Ofgem’s regional figures show the South East and South West taking 38% of all grants paid while the North East takes 3%. Also what the MCS installer register shows about “local” coverage, where a search for London installers returns firms typically based around 100 miles away.

Solar Panel Costs by UK Region, and the Ranking That Changes

DESNZ publishes regional solar costs twice, on two different capacity measures, and the two versions disagree about which region is most expensive. The South West tops one ranking and comes fourth in the other. Drawn from 257,000 installations, including a pattern in the gap between the two measures that DESNZ’s own guidance does not describe.

More research is in progress. In the meantime, see our grants hub for scheme eligibility and how to apply.

Our approach to sourcing follows the same standard as the rest of the site: every page with numbers carries a last-updated date and is checked against primary sources before publication. See our editorial standards for more on how we work.
